King David Kalakaua was elected to the throne in 1874 and reigned as the last king of Hawai’i until his death. He is often referred to as “The Merrie Monarch” because of his support to Hawaiian music, dance, and culture. Because of King Kalakaua, hula was able to become a celebration of Hawaiian culture once again. The legacy of our King and Queen must live on.
“Hula is the language of the heart, therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.” -King David Kalakaua
